Hendrix the cat aka ‘The Don’

I’ve had my pet cat, Hendrix, since he was two weeks old. After rescuing him from a pretty nasty bloke with a pitbull, I brought him home in my jacket pocket. He was the runt of the litter and could easily fit in the palm of your hand. The only way I could calm him down and get him to sleep was to play him Jimi Hendrix songs…. hence his name.

Now, seven years on he’s still as daft as ever… and about 100 times the size. Not so much a cat as a big lump of fur and whiskers. Hendrix has been appearing in my illustrations for years, hidden away behind bushes or on roofs in the background, and now he’s going to be the star of his own comic book series.

Far from being the runt, he’s now the biggest of all the local cats, and as such he’s been nicknamed ‘The Don’. Spending most of his days peering over his teritory from the window, he looks quite a lot like Marlon Brando. In this new comic books series Hendrix will be the leader of his own crew of ‘Gangster Cats’. It gives me the chance to give Henrix a  bit more room to play, without just being in the background, and lets me embark on an idea I’ve been wanting to explore for years. Film noir, and old gangster films have always held a special place for me and I have page after page of notes and ideas for stories… so that will be the main focus of the new comic. Watch this space for more… Below is a character sheet of the man, or cat himself. Hendrix ‘The Don’ Innes!
